Babies Scratching Themselves?

Post  Allibut on Tue Jan 13, 2009 5:53 pm

Anyone else having this problem with their LOs? Carolyn keeps scratching her face no matter how often I trim her nails. I'm wondering if I should try filing them too? Even when they're short they sometimes still have sharp edges. I'm also worried because she has her hands in her mouth 24/7 and I don't want her to scratch inside her mouth.

Addie occasionally scratches herself b/c I'm terrible at remembering to trim her fingernails, but I haven't worried about it. She heals fine without scars and never seems to notice that she's scratched herself.

From day 1 Bryson has been doing this. I tried clipping his nails on his first day of life and I cut skin. Every time I trim his nails I inevitably miss one and then he has another bloody gash on his face. He really digs at his face when he is tired. Currently he has two, and I heard the cries following both of them. The scratches get worse when he has a stuffy nose.

I've heard that filing is a good way to go, but haven't gotten around to it here.

Calli is a horrible face scratcher. She is always rubbing her face when she is trying to go to sleep or trying to wake up. She currently has 4 wonderfully red scratches on her face. Thank goodness she waited to do those until AFTER her 3 month photos! It seems that the longer I leave her nails the less scratches she gives herself and the more I cut them (or should I say, chew them off), the more scratches she gets. I always check to make sure I got the sharp edges but I must miss some.

Thanks so much guys. Now I don't feel like a bad mom. Although today Carolyn scratched her face the worst yet. She had so much blood. I was so worried until I wiped it away and realized it was a tiny scratch. My poor baby. The scratches, baby acne, cradle cap, and bald spots make her look so silly.
